Operation of a Mobile Wind Profiler In Severe Clutter Environments

چکیده
Wind profiling radars have been in use since the 1970s (Green et al. 1979). They are now being used with increasing frequency in operational meteorology under a wide range of conditions. One limitation to operation at many sites is contamination from ground and intermittent clutter and radio frequency interference (RFI). Currently, wind profiler radars must be deployed at locations with a minimum of clutter contamination to produce accurate winds, especially at lower altitudes required for boundary layer applications. Recent advancements in both radar hardware and signal processing allow wind profilers to operate in severe clutter environments. A mobile wind profiler capable of operation in nearly any clutter environment would be useful for many applications. Examples include local weather forecasts during forest fires and dispersion prediction in case of a toxic substance release. In addition, a rapid deployment capability is required for these real world applications. NOAA’s Environmental Technology Laboratory has developed a prototype mobile wind profiler and demonstrated its feasibility. This paper describes the changes to a standard wind profiler that are necessary to operate in severe clutter conditions and shows some early results from the mobile profiler.

Radar wind profiler signal characteristics during bird migration episodes
The Gabor transform is used to investigate non-stationary wind profiler radar signals, which are frequently occurring during the seasonal bird migration. It is shown that the Gabor phase space representation contains a wealth of information and can be effectively used to separate the atmospheric signal component from the clutter. The crucial role of the dwell time as one of the primary sampling...

A new method is presented for the suppression of intermittent clutter echoes in radar wind profilers. This clutter type is a significant problem during the seasonal bird migration and often results in large discrepancies between profiler wind measurements and independent reference data. The technique presented makes use of a discrete Gabor frame expansion of the coherently averaged time series ...

A new signal processing method is presented for the suppression of intermittent clutter echoes in radar wind profilers. The technique presented makes use of a discrete Gabor frame expansion in combination with a statistical significance test. The rationale of this algorithm is outlined and an example using data obtained with an operational 482 MHz wind profiler is given.

In this paper, we apply wavelet thresholding for removing automatically ground and intermittent clutter (airplane echoes) from wind profiler radar data. Using the concept of discrete multi-resolution analysis and non-parametric estimation theory, we develop wavelet domain thresholding rules, which allow us to identify the coefficients relevant for clutter and to suppress them in order to obtain...

Removal of clutter in the radar wind profiler is the utmost important consideration in radar. Wavelet transform is very effective method to remove the clutter. This paper presents a technique based on the wavelet transform to remove the clutter. In this technique we used Fourier transform and descrete wavelet transform after that applied inverse discrete wavelet transform for signal. These tech...
